“Farriery is both an art and a science” Hickman, J. (1977)

The Irish School of Farriery is situated on the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) campus, Kildare Town, Co. Kildare.  It was established to provide formal training for Irish based farriers, and was officially opened by Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mr. Joe Walsh TD in May 2003.

The school was built with funding from the Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2000-2006, and was equipped with the support of Kildare European Leader Teoranta (KELT) and the Foal Levy Fund.  The purpose built forge at the Irish School of Farriery contains 8 solid fuel fires and two welding bays.  Lectures are held in a lecture room contained within the facility.

The farriery courses held at the school are ratified by the Irish Farriery Authority.  Trainees attending the school receive tuition in the theoretical aspects of farriery as well as practical skills.  The aim of the school is to train apprentice farriers to a European standard, allow existing farriers access to training and provide seminars and short courses for horse owners.
